| Obverse description | Cast bronze knife money of the pointed-tip (jian shou dao) type, characteristic of the State of Yan during the Eastern Zhou period. The broad, slightly curved blade tapers to a sharply pointed tip at the upper left, with the spine forming a raised ridge along the back edge. One or more Chinese ideograms are cast in relief on the flat field of the blade. The handle is narrow and elongated, defined by two or three parallel longitudinal ribs, and terminates in a hollow circular ring at the base. The entire surface exhibits an authentic patina of malachite-green and blue-grey encrustation consistent with prolonged burial. |
