Obverse description A winged nude figure personifying the New Century rises dynamically to seize an extinguishing torch from the hands of a draped, laurel-crowned woman who reclines wearily at the foot of an oak tree, symbolizing the dying 19th century passing the light to the future. Radiating lines in the field suggest the dawn of a new era. The engraver's signature O. Roty appears in the lower left, with the dates 1801–1900 inscribed at the top.
