Additional information

Jean l'Aveugle — John the Blind — struck this issue under the monetary convention he negotiated with the County of Bar, a short-lived agreement aimed at rationalizing silver coinage circulating across the contested Franco-Imperial frontier. John had lost his sight completely by 1337, yet remained one of the most militarily active rulers in Europe, hiring out his forces across half a dozen campaigns. He died at Crécy in 1346, reportedly charging into the battle with his horse tethered to those of his knights so he could at least strike a blow.
