Obverse description Within a corded inner circle, the standing bear of Bern faces left in the field, with a small spread eagle displayed above its back. The bear, the heraldic emblem of the city, is rendered in a bold Gothic style characteristic of late medieval Swiss coinage. The circumscription MONETA BERNENSIS appears in uncial Gothic lettering between the corded circle and the irregular coin edge.
