Pioneer Dollars — privately issued trade tokens promoted by local chambers of commerce across Canada — proliferated in the 1980s and early 1990s as a mechanism to encourage spending within specific communities. The Miramichi region of New Brunswick was in particularly rough economic shape by 1993, still absorbing the shock of the 1992 closure of the Canadian Forces Base Chatham, which had anchored the local economy for decades.
The Greater Miramichi Chamber of Commerce issued this piece the year before the region's scattered municipalities formally amalgamated into the single City of Miramichi in 1995.
