Reverse description Central standing figure of a pioneer lumberjack rendered in bold relief, depicted in period working attire and boots, facing the viewer. To the left of the figure is a log cabin or camp structure, and to the right a tall-masted sailing vessel, evoking the twin pillars of the Miramichi region's heritage: the timber trade and maritime commerce. The legend PIONEER DOLLAR arcs across the upper field, flanked by small stars, while EXPIRES AUGUST 31 1991 curves around the lower periphery. The trade value inscription GOOD FOR $1.50 IN TRADE appears in the lower central field. A beaded border surrounds the entire design.

Additional information

Chatham's Pioneer Dollar was issued by the Greater Miramichi Chamber of Commerce as part of a regional trade dollar program common to Atlantic Canadian communities in the late 1980s and early 1990s, where local businesses accepted these aluminum tokens at face value to encourage spending within the community. The Miramichi region's economy at the time was heavily tied to forestry and fishing, both of which were under significant strain heading into the recession of the early 1990s — the timing of this issue reflects that mercantile anxiety as much as any civic celebration.
