Leopold VI ruled Austria and Styria simultaneously from 1194 until his death in 1230, making him the most powerful of the Babenberg dukes. These bracteate-style Vienna pfennigs were struck during a period of aggressive urban development — Leopold had granted Vienna significant municipal privileges, and the mint there was reorganized accordingly. The type is catalogued under CNA B108, though die variation within the series is considerable and not fully systematized.
