Additional information

The Gutenwerth pfennigs span one of the most administratively turbulent stretches of Babenberg rule, overlapping both Leopold VI's final years and the entirety of Frederick II's reign as Duke of Austria — a man subsequently styled "the Quarrelsome" for his repeated conflicts with the Habsburg neighbors, the Hungarian crown, and the Emperor himself. Frederick's excommunication by Gregory IX and his brief, forced abdication in 1236 created genuine uncertainty over who held minting authority, which may account for attribution difficulties within this type series.
