Additional information

Leopold III ruled as Margrave of Austria from 1095 until his death in 1136, and his canonization in 1485 made him the patron saint of Austria — an unusual posthumous distinction for a coin-issuing ruler. These bracteate-style pfennigs circulated in a polity still several decades away from ducal status, the elevation to duchy coming only under his son Henry II in 1156 by the Privilegium Minus. The CNA B5 classification places this among the earliest systematically catalogued Austrian issues.
