Johann III von Vienne held the see of Basel during one of the diocese's most contentious periods — his episcopate coincided with the Great Schism's opening years and persistent territorial friction with the city's burghers, who were steadily eroding episcopal political control over Basel itself. That the mint continued producing small silver pfennige through this tenure reflects less monetary confidence than institutional habit; the city would effectively sideline episcopal coinage authority within a generation.
