Additional information

Frederick the Handsome's claim to the title King of Germany was disputed from the moment of his election in 1314, when a rival faction simultaneously elected Louis IV of Bavaria. The resulting civil war, settled only at the Battle of Mühldorf in 1322 where Frederick was captured, created sustained fiscal pressure on the Viennese mint throughout this coinage's production window.

Frederick remained Louis's prisoner until 1325, a captivity that effectively paralyzed Austrian monetary policy for three years.
