Rann-type pfennigs of Salzburg from this period were struck under a divided episcopal authority — Eberhard II held the archbishopric while the minting rights at Rann (modern Brežice, now in Slovenia) involved the counts of the region. The bracteate and thin-flan traditions common to south German and Austrian minting in this period make these small silvers fragile survivors, prone to creasing and edge loss that has nothing to do with circulation wear.
Eberhard II served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1200 to 1246, making him one of the longest-tenured holders of that see in the medieval period.
