| Obverse description | Facing bust of a mitred bishop shown from the shoulders, wearing a decorated mitre and vestments, depicted in a highly stylised Romanesque manner. The figure is flanked on either side by a tower with a rounded roof, forming a three-towered architectural composition that evokes the facade of Basel Cathedral. A small cross surmounts the central mitre, and the letters S and N (the latter inverted) appear in the upper field to the left and right of the cross respectively. The design is contained within a plain inner border, with the flan exhibiting the typical irregular outline of a hand-hammered medieval bracteate-style pfennig. |
