The Bishopric of Basel's mid-13th century bracteate pfennigs were struck during a period when episcopal mints across the Upper Rhine competed aggressively for regional monetary dominance. Bishop Berthold von Pfirt, who held the see from 1249 to 1262, consolidated minting rights that his predecessors had long disputed with the city's burghers — a conflict that would eventually strip the bishops of independent coinage authority entirely within a generation.
