Additional information

Albert I acquired Austria through the 1282 Rheinfelden partition, when his father Rudolf of Habsburg divided the dynasty's newly won territories between his sons — the first time Austria passed formally into Habsburg hands. These bracteate-style pfennigs were the workhorses of local commerce during Albert's consolidation of ducal power, a period marked by near-constant conflict with the Bohemian nobility and the Austrian ministeriales who resisted centralized control. CNA B194 distinguishes this type within a closely related sequence of Austrian pfennigs that are easily confused without careful die study.
