| Reverse description | The reverse depicts the myth of Hero and Leander, the legendary lovers associated with Abydus on the Hellespont. Leander is shown swimming through stylized waves across the Hellespont, his body semi-recumbent and arm outstretched toward the right. On the right stands a tall column or tower, atop which a draped figure of Hero holds a torch to guide her lover. A small Eros flies above Leander at upper left, carrying a torch. The Greek ethnic legend ΑΒΥΔΗΝΩΝ is distributed around the field, with the letter N in exergue. A beaded border frames the entire composition. |
