Additional information

Marcianopolis, founded by Trajan and named for his sister Marciana, was one of the principal civic minting centers of Moesia Inferior, and it struck prolifically under Gordian III — more so than almost any other provincial city during his reign. The pentassaria denomination, worth five assaria, represents the heaviest bronze fraction regularly struck at this mint, intended for local market circulation rather than inter-provincial trade.

RPC VII.2 #27919 places this among a large and still-being-catalogued group; the Online RPC project continues to refine die studies for Marcianopolis issues of this period.
