Obverse description A bold cross-crosslet occupies the central field, its arms extending nearly to the surrounding legend. Small crosslets fill each quadrant formed by the principal cross. The circumferential legend, rendered in crude but legible Latin majuscules, names the issuing ruler and is enclosed between two concentric linear borders. The flan is irregular, characteristic of Viking-Age hammered coinage, and the relief is robust with a slightly uneven strike typical of late ninth-century York mint production.
