Obverse description Facing crowned bust of King Henry I rendered in the angular, stylised manner characteristic of early twelfth-century English hammered coinage. The king is depicted wearing an ornate crown with pendilia, holding a sceptre topped with a cross in his right hand, with a small quatrefoil or rosette device visible to the right of the bust in the field. Pellet ornaments adorn the crown and garments, and the bust is flanked by decorative elements extending toward the inner border. The circumscribed legend reads +hENRI REx, naming the issuing monarch.
