Obverse description Diademed bust of Harthacnut facing right, depicted in the Anglo-Saxon tradition with beaded diadem and draped shoulders. The effigy is rendered in a bold, slightly stylised hammered style characteristic of the mid-eleventh century English coinage. The king's title and name appear as a circular legend surrounding the bust in Latin letters, reading clockwise from the left. The portrait exhibits the typical strong facial profile seen on coins of the Jewel Cross type, with pronounced nose and angular jaw.
