Obverse description Diademed and draped bust of King Ecgberht facing right, contained within a raised inner linear circle. The portrait is rendered in the characteristically schematic Anglo-Saxon style, with bold, deeply struck features. A Latin legend reading +AECGBEARHT REX encircles the central design in the outer field, separated from the bust by the inner border. The die work reflects the hammered coinage tradition of the early ninth-century Canterbury mint.
