Obverse description Central field features a small pattée cross within a raised inner circle, dividing the design into an inner and outer zone. The royal legend EΛDRED REX, reading 'King Eadred', is arranged around the inner circle in angular Saxon letterforms, running clockwise within the outer field. The lettering is bold and typical of mid-10th-century Anglo-Saxon hand-punched die work. The coin is struck on a broad, irregular flan with a plain milled border along the outer rim. The overall style is characteristic of the Two Line type issued during Eadred's reign.
