Obverse description A plain Latin cross with expanding arms occupies the central field, with the legend of the king's name arranged around it in bold, widely-spaced characters interspersed with decorative pellet-and-arc stops. The lettering is executed in a robust, slightly irregular hand characteristic of Viking-Age York coinage. The coin is bordered by a beaded outer rim. Individual letters are large relative to the flan, filling the quarters between the cross arms. The overall design reflects the Carolingian penny tradition as adapted by Scandinavian rulers of Northumbria.
