Obverse description Diademed and draped bust of Alfred the Great facing right, rendered in a late Anglo-Saxon portrait style with fine linear detailing on the drapery at the shoulder. The king's hair is depicted with incised diagonal lines beneath the diadem, and the facial features are boldly struck in high relief. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy reading ÆLFR ED REX, identifying the ruler as King Alfred. The flan is irregular in shape, as is characteristic of hand-struck coinage of this period.

Reverse description Central field features the celebrated Londonia monogram — an elaborate interlaced design incorporating the letters of LONDONIA, symbolising Alfred's recapture and refoundation of London — flanked on either side by small crosses pattée. The moneyer's name TILEVINE is divided above and below the monogram, with the word MONETΛ completing the legend to identify Tilwine as the issuing moneyer. The design is executed with crisp, angular lettering typical of the finest Alfredian penny coinage.
