| Obverse description | Within a beaded inner circle, a small cross pattée occupies the central field, its arms of equal length with slightly splayed terminals. A continuous Latin legend in angular Anglo-Saxon letterforms encircles the inner circle, reading clockwise within the outer field. The overall design is characteristic of the Two Line type coinage issued at Canterbury under Alfred the Great, with bold, deeply struck lettering typical of the period. |
