Obverse description The obverse presents the royal name legend AEÐELVVEARD REX arranged in two concentric registers reading around the coin's circumference, typical of the Two-Line or Inscribed Cross type coinage of ninth-century Anglo-Saxon Mercia. At the centre, within a beaded inner circle, a bold angular monogram composed of the letters of the king's name is depicted in a style characteristic of Carolingian-influenced Anglo-Saxon die-cutting. The lettering is rendered in bold raised relief with the characteristic square and wedge-shaped strokes of the period. The field within the inner circle is plain, framing the central device clearly. The overall design reflects the epigraphic style of the mid-ninth century English penny tradition.
