| Obverse description | Diademed draped bust of King Æthelred II facing left, rendered in the angular late Anglo-Saxon style characteristic of the Intermediate Small Cross coinage. The effigy is enclosed within a plain inner circle, surrounded by an outer legend border with a beaded rim. A notable typological feature of this issue is that the letters R and X in the obverse legend appear as separate, individual characters rather than as a ligature. The circumscription reads ÆTHELRED REX ANGLORX. |
