| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of King Miguel I facing right, rendered in high relief with fine detail to the hair curls and laurel wreath tied with a ribbon at the nape. The king's truncation shows a draped mantle with decorative clasp. The circumferential Latin legend reads MICHAEL I D G PORTUGALIÆ ET ALGARB REX, interrupted at the base by the mint date 1828 placed in the exergue area below the bust. The field is smooth and the portrait reflects the neoclassical engraving style characteristic of early nineteenth-century Portuguese gold coinage. |
