| Reverse description | The elaborate Portuguese royal arms displayed within a large ornate baroque cartouche, featuring the quartered shield with the five bezants of Portugal and the castle of Castile, surmounted by a royal crown topped with a cross. The cartouche is richly decorated with acanthus leaf scrollwork, floral sprays, and foliate ornaments extending to the rim, filling the entire field in high relief. The widow's veil portrait of Maria I was adopted following the death of her consort Pedro III in 1786 — the same year this pattern was struck. The Casa da Moeda was exploring whether a new copper denomination of this weight class could function in colonial as well as metropolitan circulation. It was never approved for regular issue, which is precisely why Gomes catalogued it under the E1 series of ensaios and patterns rather than the standard copper sequence.
