| Obverse description | Draped and laureate bust of Queen Maria I facing right, her hair elaborately coiffed with a laurel wreath and flowing tresses adorned with floral and foliate ornaments, rendered in high relief in the Baroque style. The truncation of the bust is richly decorated with lace and drapery. The circular Latin legend runs along the toothed border, with the date appearing in the lower exergual area and the mint mark positioned at the lower right of the bust. The overall portrait is finely engraved, reflecting the work of the royal die-engraver Joseph Gaspar. |

| Reverse description | The Portuguese royal arms displayed in an ornate Baroque cartouche: the central shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons in cross formation, each charged with five bezants) is surrounded by a border of seven castles representing the kingdom of the Algarve. The shield is set upon an elaborately mantled coat of arms with acanthus-leaf scrollwork and flanking decorative foliage, supported by a shell motif at the base. The entire composition is surmounted by a royal crown with cross-pommée finial. The field is fully occupied by the heraldic design with no peripheral legend, and the coin is bordered by a continuous toothed rim. |
