| Obverse description | King Philippe VI of Valois enthroned in majesty beneath an ornate Gothic canopy or pavilion, from which the coin derives its name. The king is crowned and robed in a fleur-de-lis-strewn mantle, holding a sceptre in his right hand and a main-de-justice in his left. The throne is flanked by the drapery of the pavilion, with its fringed valance prominently rendered above. The entire composition is executed in fine Gothic style with rich detail in the fabric and architectural elements. The surrounding legend reads PHILIPPVS DEI GRA FRANCORVM REX, separated by annulets, within a beaded inner border. |
