Obverse description Plain field with no effigy or royal portrait, reflecting the pattern status of this piece struck during the interregnum following Edward VIII's abdication before an approved royal portrait could be adopted. The word MODEL is incused in capital serif letters at the centre of the field, serving as an official designation to distinguish this piece from a circulating coin. A raised circular rim frames the otherwise unadorned surface.

Reverse description A kangaroo in full profile strides to the left at centre field, rendered in bold relief with characteristic naturalistic detail including elongated hind legs and tail providing balance. The legend AUSTRALIA curves along the upper periphery within a beaded border, while the date 1937 appears to the right of the kangaroo and the denomination PENNY is inscribed along the lower portion of the field. The initials KG, referencing engraver George Kruger Gray, appear within the design.
