Additional information

South Africa's 1989 coinage patterns were produced as the Mint evaluated a shift from the existing alloy specifications toward nickel-plated steel — a cost-driven response to rising base metal prices that would eventually reshape the entire circulation series in the early 1990s. Pattern sets from this transitional period were struck in strictly limited numbers for internal evaluation and selective distribution to government and banking officials, never entering circulation.
