Obverse description Central field displays the crossed keys of Saint Peter — the papal emblem — rendered in low relief with a tiara surmounting the cross of the keys, characteristic of pontifical coinage of the Comtat Venaissin. The design is set within a roughly circular flan typical of hammered billon coinage of the early seventeenth century. The surrounding Latin legend reads PAVLVS V PONT MAX, identifying the issuing authority as Pope Paul V, Supreme Pontiff. Pellet separators divide the legend elements. The flan shows the irregular edge profile inherent to hand-struck issues of this period.
