| Obverse description | Central field dominated by the elaborate tughra (imperial monogram) of Sultan Osman III, rendered in the characteristic Ottoman calligraphic style with elongated vertical strokes (tuğ) rising prominently above the interlaced body of the cipher. The tughra is flanked by sweeping curved flourishes to the right. Osman III reigned less than three years, from 1754 until his death in 1757, making provincial issues from his tenure inherently short-series. Egypt's mint at Misr operated under the authority of the local pasha but struck in the sultan's name, and the billon content of these small-denomination pieces reflects the chronic debasement that plagued Ottoman provincial coinage throughout the mid-eighteenth century — a fiscal pressure driven largely by the empire's mounting military expenditures on its western frontiers.
