Obverse description Central tughra of Sultan Mahmud I rendered within a fine lattice or reticulated pattern, flanked by a single star to the upper right and eight stars arranged beneath the device. The tughra, serving as the sultan's imperial monogram, dominates the field and is executed in the characteristic calligraphic Ottoman style. An ornamental device appears to the right of the tughra.
