The `Île de France`, one of the postal ships designed to carry passengers and mail, was laid up in October 1924 and launched in March 1926 at the Saint-Nazaire - Penhoët shipyard. `1927` corresponds to the date of her maiden voyage, from Le Havre to New York on June 22, 1927.
