Obverse description Standing nude figure of Mercury wearing a winged helmet, his right arm outstretched holding a caduceus, with a sea creature or dolphin in low relief at his feet in the lower left field. A decorative wave border runs along the lower rim, with the motto 'ON! SAIL ON!' inscribed below, and the engraver's signature 'AITKEN FECIT' in small incuse letters at lower right. The surrounding legend commemorates the opening of the Panama Canal in Roman numerals MCMXV.
