Additional information

Tipu Sultan inherited a Mysore mint system from his father Hyder Ali and immediately set about reforming it — introducing a new calendar, new nomenclature, and new coin types that deliberately broke from Mughal-derived conventions. The Patan mint, one of several he operated, struck paisas during the period when Tipu was simultaneously fighting the Second and Third Anglo-Mysore Wars, meaning much of this coinage was produced under conditions of active military campaign finance rather than routine administration.

Copper issues from this reign circulated hard in a war economy and survivors in problem-free condition are genuinely scarce.
