Obverse description Eagle standing left on a rocky outcrop, wings partially spread, head turned to the left with beak open, rendered in bold relief characteristic of late fifth-century Sicilian bronze coinage. The bird's plumage is depicted with incised feather detail along the wing and body. The Greek legend AKPA appears vertically in the right field, identifying the issuing city of Akragas. A beaded border encircles the design. The composition reflects the civic emblem of Akragas, where the eagle served as the sacred symbol of Zeus.

Additional information

The dating of this issue places it squarely within the Carthaginian destruction of Akragas in 406 BC, one of the most catastrophic events in Sicilian Greek history. Hannibal Mago's forces — and after his death, Himilco — besieged the city for eight months before its inhabitants abandoned it entirely. Bronze civic coinage of this terminal phase is inherently short-lived by circumstance, cut off not by monetary reform but by the city's physical obliteration.
