The Edoni were among the Thraco-Macedonian tribes issuing heavy silver coinage in the decades following the Persian Wars, their mines in the Mt. Pangaion region producing silver of exceptional purity. Getas is identified as a king of the Edoni through these coins alone — no literary source names him directly. The octodrachm weight standard, common to several neighboring tribal issues, reflects regional commercial norms rather than alignment with any Greek polis system.
The piece references BMC Greek#1, placing it as the type specimen for this ruler in the British Museum's own classification.
