Obverse description Central field depicts an upright sword flanked by two heraldic shields, all contained within a beaded inner circle. A circular Latin legend runs between the inner beaded circle and an outer linear circle. The design is characteristic of medieval Catalan hammered billon coinage, with crude but legible lettering typical of the late 13th to early 14th century.

Additional information

Hugo V ruled Empúries during a period when the county was in near-permanent friction with the Crown of Aragon, and the right to mint was one of the few levers of autonomy the local lords still controlled. These billon issues were struck at low silver content even by the standards of the period, which tells you something about the fiscal pressure the county was operating under.
