Obverse description A plain Latin cross with an elongated lower limb extending downward through the surrounding legend. A small annelet appears beneath the initial cross mark at the top of the field. The peripheral legend reads + PhILIPPVS REX in Latin characters, identifying the issuer as King Philip IV of France. The design is characteristic of the late Capetian hammered billon coinage of the early 14th century, struck in a simple but authoritative style.
