| Obverse description | Central field features a large cross pattée enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with four pellets occupying the angles between the arms of the cross. The surrounding legend, rendered in crude Romanesque lettering characteristic of 11th-century Capetian coinage, reads PIIIPVS RX, a contracted form of PHILIPPVS REX, referencing King Philip I of France. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, consistent with hand-hammered production. The overall die work is bold but rudimentary, reflecting the provincial workshop style of the Mâcon mint. |
