Obverse description Crude facing bust of Count Charles I of Anjou, rendered in a schematic medieval style with visible hair strands and simplified facial features. The effigy is enclosed within a plain inner circle, surrounded by the Latin legend in the outer field. The portrait is struck in the characteristically rough hammered technique of 13th-century Provençal billon coinage, with the head slightly turned to the left.
