Obverse description Central field features a plain cross within a beaded inner circle, the arms of the cross extending nearly to the border. A Carolingian-style Latin legend reading LVDOVVICVS (Louis) surrounds the beaded circle, introduced by a cross pattée. The flan is irregular and somewhat uneven, characteristic of ninth-century hammered coinage, with the lettering partially weak due to die wear and off-center striking.
