Obverse description The obverse features the royal name LVDOVVIC arranged in two lines across the coin's field in bold Carolingian capital letters, referencing King Louis I (the Pious). The inscription is divided horizontally, with LVDO in the upper register and VVIC in the lower, characteristic of the Carolingian denier and obol typology. The lettering is large and fills the flan, rendered in a plain epigraphic style typical of early Carolingian monetary reform coinage. No border or inner circle is present, and the flat field surrounds the boldly struck legend.
