Obverse description A plain cross pattée occupies the central field, enclosed within a raised inner circle or beaded border. The surrounding legend, reading HLVDOVVICS IMI (Emperor Louis), is arranged in Latin characters around the periphery of the coin, separated from the central motif by the inner circle. The hammered flan is irregular in outline, typical of Carolingian striking practice, and the die work is bold though somewhat roughly executed.

Reverse description A plain cross pattée is prominently struck in the central field, likewise enclosed within a raised inner circle. The peripheral legend, reading XPICTIANA RELIGIO (Christian religion), encircles the cross in Latin characters, with a star or cross-shaped ornament marking the beginning of the inscription. The overall design mirrors the obverse in its bold, simplified Carolingian style, characteristic of the reform coinage struck under Louis the Pious.
