Obverse description Central cross pattee set within a beaded inner circle, the arms of the cross extending to the inner border. The surrounding field bears the royal legend in Latin capitals, reading clockwise around the periphery. The design is characteristic of Carolingian monetary reform coinage, with bold, deeply struck lettering and a plain field between the inner circle and the outer edge.
