Obverse lettering ✠ LOTERIVS REX
(Translation: Lothair, king.)
Reverse description The reverse presents a plain cross with expanded arms dividing the field into four quadrants, a standard type for Carolingian deniers and obols of this period. The cross extends to the inner beaded border, creating a bold central device. The surrounding Latin legend BITVRICES CIVIT, introduced by a cross pattée, identifies the mint city of Bourges. The lettering is executed in a characteristic late Carolingian epigraphic style, and the overall die work reflects the regional workshop tradition of the Bourges mint under the reign of Lothair.
